A troubled season start with an happy ending!
GhostSpeed debut season review
League: World Championship
Team: GhostSpeed Racing Team
GhostSpeed Racing Team first season, at Formula
"GS logo 2007 FSR" SimRacing, a long and awaited step for the team, bought a mixture of different experiences, feelings, and most of all, a sense of job done, despite all difficulties.
The season, or if one prefer, the winter season, started with a big enjoyment as GhostSpeed Racing Team announce it would join the Formula SimRacing World Championship. After the success internally, it was the next big step for the team.
With the presentation of the 2007 car, the GS03, GhostSpeed Racing Team also presented its initial line-up, composed at first only by national talent from Portugal. The Portuguese champion, Luis Azinheira, and João Barbosa, the runner up. New faces to a new challenge.
This would soon change tough, and what should be a stable learning period for the team, turned out in some very confusing and tough races for GhostSpeed.
The first race, unusually disputed at Malaysia, proved to be a shocker, as although a tough field was expected, GhostSpeed was relegated to the last places. To make things worst for the team, constant changes in the line-up for the next round would bring even more instability.
Luis Azinheira, team’s main bet for 2007 WC, had to withdraw from the league due to personal commitments, just after one round, being replaced by a complete, at the time, unknown driver for GhostSpeed. Stephane Rouault debuted at Bahrain, at the time on loan from Roaldo Racing, and made a killer race by getting GhostSpeed first ever points at the World Championship.
João kept racing despite having a hard time, but good things always come, and the Portuguese driver from Porto, would have his reward at Melbourne by clinching one point, on what would be his best result of the season.
The return of the team to Europe, in time for the 4th birthday, marked a turning point, as the team hit rock bottom at Barcelona. João Barbosa facing problems on his racing hardware would have to make a sabbatical period, before he returned mid season, at the World Series.
It was the second line-up change at GhostSpeed. But things wouldn’t stop there, as Rouault on loan, had to return for a one race time,
"GS03 presentation" at his mother team, Roaldo Racing. GhostSpeed found a last hour replacement at a young talented driver from Australia, who raced at the time at the World Series, Blair Disley. He would eventually sign for the rest of the season, and proved to be a right choice.
From this moment on, GhostSpeed Racing Team would found the needed stability, and started to be a regular scoring point’s team, which at the end would help climbing from nearly last in the team’s standings to mid table.
In Monaco GhostSpeed would get back to points, trough Blair Disley, and with a good performance from Stephane Rouault, the team showed it had what it takes to challenge for the points, which at the Formula SimRacing World Championship, is a win itself for a newcomer team, like GhostSpeed.
From there on, as said before, GhostSpeed would get regularly in the points, like in Montreal, by Rouault, and Indianapolis again by Blair Disley, who did probably one of his best races.
The second return to Europe would not be good for GhostSpeed Racing Team. Magny-Cours could be the first double points finish for the team, but ended in disaster, and instead of points, the payback was a double did not finish.
But as always, things soon would return to where they belong, and after a French frustration, a British ‘party’ with GhostSpeed getting the best points collection at the time, with Rouault getting 6th and Disley 7th. A big boost for the team, that kept the good form at Nurburgring with more points and with the best result so far, a 5th by Disley.
The young Australian driver was at the mid season, the team saviour, as Stephane was having a not so good form at the time, for which is summer break did not help. At Hungaroring GhostSpeed would be left empty handed, but that wasn’t the case of Istanbul and Monza, where yet again, Disley was collecting some valuable points.
In the last part of the 2007 season, and with GhostSpeed already setting sights on 2008 season, the team made an incredible recovery, and only twice it did not score points. The Interlagos engine failure for Disley would be the only big downside in the last four races. At the last three races,
"GS03 racing FSR pic01" again, out of Europe, GhostSpeed scored always points, apart from the referred Interlagos engine failure.
The last season race, at Fuji Speedway, would seal on a high the team’s first complete season at the World Championship. Stephane made his best race of the entire season by challenging for the podium, which was the only thing missing from GhostSpeed portfolio. Disley would also say goodbye in a positive way by getting yet another solid points finish.
After the show was over, and at the final aftermath, GhostSpeed Racing Team got a well enjoyed 5th final place at the team’s standings, which looking back at the season, was a win for the team, which will give the needed boost to take charge on another hard and tough season at the World Championship.
Stephane and Disley would also get a good finish position, and with the same amount of points, they would be placed at 8th and 9th respectively.
Ace Series: the late season recovery
The season report wouldn’t be over without making a mention to our friends from the World Series, who in the last part of the season made GhostSpeed recover from the ashes to a wining team in this class, which lead to another good season ending classification.
All in all GhostSpeed would get two wins out of six podiums, which are until now, the team’s best overall results in Formula SimRacing.
Disley got the two wins and two other podiums, being the other ones conquered by the Swedish promise, Rickard Hellsten, who only joined in the last races of the season, being close to win one of them. The other team hero at the World Series would be the returned João Barbosa, who did miss the podium by a very little margin. He was tough a regular top 5 challenger and it is expected that it continues so in 2008. To finish for good the season report, other drivers must be referred by their continuous effort trough the 2007 season. They are Filipe Santos, one of GhostSpeed youngest and most promising drivers, Xico Rocha, and Emre Uysal from Turkey.
A big thank you to all!
