The Scrutineer's AMA 09 Predictions
The Scrutineer Evaluates 2009's AMA Chances
The Scrutineer has spoken. He says what he
"The Scrutineer" see's and this time he's been watching AMA closely for the biggest grid in FSR is about to get ugly in Melbourne. Here's the low down according to The Scrutineer...
WS AMA will be very interesting this year given the new cars, 26 car grid limits and the now compulsory pit stop. This could really throw a spanner in the works. So who's hot or cold going into 2009?
All Italian for 09, Bracciano Racing look on top form to take the title again. Antionio Perrone was runner up last season in a year that saw him blossom into a front runner driver. This year really could be his year. However there could be trouble coming from teammate Alessandro Marcelli, the 2007 champ. After a year in PRo which started well with a second in Melbourne, it was all downhill before he left the grid at Spain. Now back in AMA for a second go, he'll want to prove that he's lost lost face nor pace. Who'll triumph? My money's on Perrone but the rest of the field may end up ganging up on the Bracciano guys.
Hot or Cold? Scoulding Hot!!!
Rothmans F1 Racing 2
A tale of two drivers, Simon Adebisi, an upcoming star of the future after finishing a great 4th last season, and Graham Dickinson, whom has shown flashes of speed in his debut year but will be looking to step up a notch in 2009. Adebisi will be looking for wins but won't have the help of his teammate right behind him and that could be the chink in his title chances. However Dickinson will be one to watch as he continues to improve.
Hot or Cold? Hot Mumma!
Malcolm Rice leads his own team into 2009 with optimism. Malcolm Rice himself is experienced and showed his racecraft with an excellent string of points finishes in 2008 to end up 9th despite never being a true front runner. Ari Kesseli stays with the team for 2009 after showing flashes of great pace but also the tendancy to not make it to the chequered flag. If calmed down by Rice's experience, Kesseli could make the points regularly and a few top 5 finishes will be the cards.
Hot or Cold? Simmering
Torrent Motorsports - IPForge.com
Torrent Motorsports IPF have potential for success in 2009. Simon Mulhuish brings technical knowhow and has scored points in PRO. He now needs to turn that into consistant points finishes to help move the team forward. Eyes will be on Michael Theis though who in his four races in AMA last season topped out with an impressive 4th. He needs to improve on bringing the car home with a poor 45% lap completion rate. If they can sort out race finishes, this team could be a strong force.
Hot or Cold? Turning up the heat
Torrent Motorsports - RedShiftNews.com
With only 14 race starts between them, the drivers for TM2 are hoping their lack of experience will be made up for in race pace and enthusiasm. Juan Nicola desperately needs to work on his finish rate and 2 finishes in 9 starts is an awful record however he has top 10 finishes in both those races. Pedro Melim has yet to make it home in a race to date. His 5 race starts in the Winter Series showed that he is able to race hard however he needs to work on his ability to keep it on the tarmac. If both drivers can make it home, points should be on offer but it'll be a steep learning curve for them both.
Hot or Cold? Jumpers At the Ready
Just 9 races between them, Anthony Herbert and Niko Van Doren has a steep learning curve ahead of them. However in pre season testing, Van Doren has been flying and is one of AMA's dark horses entering 2009. He does however need to improve on his 7/72 completed lap performance. Anthony Herbert will be busying himself at the rear half of the field battling for points and will do well if he can improve his overal lap on lap consistency.
Hot or Cold? Hot + Cold = Luke Warm
Rothmans F1 Racing 1
After stepping down from ADV to AMA, Ken Hunter will be upgainst it to qualify. However he is a commited racer who once on the grid has shown that he can bring home points on race day. Peter Miller will learn from his teammates safe racing to improve his finishing record and add to the points tally but word on the paddock suggests a tough year ahead for Rothmans 1.
Hot or Cold? Chilly Winter Breeze
RC Motorsports has some marked potential for 2009. Fredrik Arbegard has speed behind him and showed it with two 6th places last season. He'll be looking for consistancy to propel him into the top half of the field this year. Ajibola Lawal is an unknown quantity with one WC start which was over before it begun. Regular top 10 finishes should be well on the cards for RC.
Hot or Cold? Toasted Sandwich
GMT-DHR - AMA
The car looks fast but GMT - DHR will be hoping their drivers can deliver the goods in 2009. Newcomber Ivan Kaloyanov gained a reputation on his debut for getting in the way of the leaders however in testing his pace has somewhat improved. Darren Johnston joined during 2008 and has an excellent 90% lap completion rate however his overall pace needs to improve to help lift the team up into the top half of the grid.
Hot or Cold? Autumn
Rothmans F1 Racing
Rothmans' grid domination in sheer car size will be a factor for 2009. Team owner Scott Beck is very experienced and knows how to bring the car home however he'll be battling for qualification in the huge grid we have this season for AMA. Teammate Trevor Rooms has more latent speed but needs to translate that into results to ensure he makes an impression in 2009.
Hot or Cold? Cold hands
Rothmans F1 Racing 3
Final of 4 teams for Scott Beck gives us unknown Ed Williams who didn't finish any of his three races last season although he qualified comfortabliy for them, and point scoring Alain Moody who is expected to lead the team. He showed during his 5 races last season that he can keep the car on the road and pick up regular points and if he can do that throughout the season, he'll put Rothmans 3 in good stead.
Hot or Cold? Early Spring
Williamson Dynamics F1
A brand new team entering for 2009 brings with it a lot of fun and spirit. Debutant Benjamin Chong has gone well in pre season testing to ensure that qualification will be a breeze and he could spring a suprise or two this season. Newcomer Marco vandenbroeck has adapted himself well in pre season testing too however both drivers will need to ensure they can keep on the black stuf come race day and we could see some fireworks.
Hot or Cold? Hot Under the Collar
Tandem F1 Team
Tandem will have Spanish tempers flaring in 2009 with an all Spanish line up. Alberto De Juan will lead the team after some impressive flashes of form in his 6 race stint in 2008. Teammate Fran Miller has a race under his belt but only made it to lap 2 and so will be looking to make an impression for 2009. De Juan could lift the team into regular points scorers.
Hot or Cold? Gazpacho
The sole privateer in AMA, Chris Knight is both brave and mad. He'll have his work cut out on set ups and in his 17 races for AMA has yet to score with a disasterous 15% lap competion rate. There is little suggest 2009 will be better but you must give him credit for going alone.
Hot or Cold? Brrrr *shiver*
Second brand new team for AMA, Shadow Overtakers have looked shaky in pre season. Debutants Michael Pieneman and more notably Carlo Willemsen have been proping up the time sheets and it may take a few races to get into their stride. However qualification will be a real challenge for the duo.
Hot or Cold? Mastercard Lola
Third new team Revolution Motorsports has extensive backing from the Gentlemans League which will hold debutants Matt J Gray and Johnathan Hill in good stead. However the car has not had high mileage and this may cause them trouble early in 2009. One to watch.
Hot or Cold? Chilled
Brox F1 Team
Another new team, another all Spanish line up. Julian Esteban and Javi Tuco are making their debuts in Melbourne and they definately have fast sounding names however it remains to be seen if they can translate fast names into fast on track performances.
Hot or Cold? Heavy Rain
Precision Motorsports came late to AMA but they come baring an interesting driving line up. Johannes Kunkel comes from PRO where his driving ranged wildly, however he can produce the goods when it all goes to plan. Newcomer Muhammed Patel will be joining him after a single race in the winter series. He showed a good platform from which to improve from and this team could be a force for regular points in 2009.
Hot or Cold? Salmonella Warm
Precision Motorsports 2
Team 2 brings experienced Leon du Preez to the fray who impressed in the later half of 2008 with two 6th place finishes and much improved race pace. He'll be looking for more of the same this year. Teammate Corey Gabriel could be the thorn in his side as in 6 races last season he showed great form, culminating in a podium at China. A dark horse for 2009, he could spring a few surprises if he keeps up his consistancy.
Hot or Cold? Burning
The Spanish assault continues with newcomer Toni's Hernandez & Aleman joining the party of AMA. Both Toni's are unproven and unknowns and with no tracktime date to hand, we have to assume qualification may be an issue.
Hot or Cold? Evaporated Milk
Precision Motorsports 3
One car team but part of the Precision banner, newcomer Adrian Greda joins for his first season of FSR. Already running another league, he has previous open wheel experience which will hold him in good stead for a steady debut season.
Hot or Cold? Middling
Faster Than Speed Amatuer
Lead FTS AMA driver, Heinz Vanderhoydonck will have a plethora of info at hand and after showing slow, steady improvement throughout 2008, he'll be looking to continue his progress in 2009. So far it's looking good with speedy results in pre season testing but he'll need to starting putting strings of laps together in order to threaten points more regularly. Nick Oldenhuis joins as second driver looking for points finishes and regular scoring.
Hot or Cold? Amber glow
A late addition to AMA, European F1 is a feeder team for fellow newbies Williamson Dynamics F1 and so therefore we would assume would be on similar pace. Drivers Michael Folcher and Rizwan Sarwar are new to FSR and have a steep learning curve ahead and with little track time to date, they'll be up against it to make it onto the grid in Melbourne.
