with high hopes after the successful weekend at Valencia which culminated into the team's first victory in WC. Mikkonen turned out to once again be the strongest link at Monza, as the Finn irresistably stormed into his second straight victory, boosting his championship hopes.
In AMA the team had a modest weekend which ended up in good point scoring positions, as Ajibola Lawal carried home a solid 6th after starting from the pits, completed by a 7th from Dovydas Malinauskas.
Ajibola Lawal commented:"Overall good race for me finishing 6th from the pitlane and accumulating the fastest lap. Had great pace and a long first stint which worked great as I was able to jump alot of people during the pit stops along with overtaking on track. Hopefully I can win providing I get another trouble free weekend in Fuji."
The PRO race saw Allar Foht and Emre Uysal qualify within top 10, but both drivers eventually suffered retirements after some hazardous moments in the early race. A one stop strategy would have yielded a good finish for Foht, who certainly hopes for some better luck in the following races.
Allar Foht commented: "Q went very well, did 1 lap and managed to get 6th place with my heavy car, was going for a 1 stopper strategy. Race started nervously, car didnt feel so good and i was just trying to keep up with 2 stoppers. And then, one lap, I touched accidentally my h-shifter and boom, spinned. It tooked out some guys, so i am very sorry for them."
In ACE, Rasmus Tali proved it is possible to get a good result starting from the pitlane. After an eventful race Tali grabbed 4th position. We can only speculate where he would have been without the penalty.
The weekend culminated into the World Championship, where Jaakko Mikkonen and Mattias Stahre qualified within top 10, starting 3rd and 10th. Stahre had a consistent race, but was forced to retiremenet, being influenced by Patrick De Wit exiting Parabolica sideways. Mikkonen carried on strongly in second place behind Hirrle. In stint 2 the Finn lost some ground but was able to recover in a storming drive to take the lead by overtaking Hirrle. From there on the race was in the hands of the Finn, who took his second win and closed the gap to Kolbe to 16 points.
Jaakko Mikkonen commented: "Qual: I had quite bad framerate problem, which was causing delay for steering. It was difficult to do any good laps. Well after all they were enough for Q3. For Q3 i was able to set graphic details to lower level. It did help slightly. Still Q3 time was also quite poor. I had no confidence for the car. Luckily my time was enough for P3 on the grid. Race: Framerate problem occured again at start. I just took it easy and avoided risks. On second chicane Disley braked too late and opened room to pass him. Rest of the stint I was driving behind Dennis Hirrle without much chances to pass. I tried to do an extra lap before pitting in. This was a mistake which almost cost a lot but luckily I managed to get back to the pits without losing too much time. Later on the second stint i managed to pass Hirrle. Shortly after the pass i realised my brakes were not going to last. Rest of the race I was forced to save the brakes. Maybe Dennis was also having problems as he was not able to catch me. Race win is always a good result. This time it came easier than in Valencia but i don't complain. Hopefully we can have similar results in next races.
Ondre Kuncman commented: "I am obviously delighted with the second Jaakko's win which slightly boosted his chances for championship. 4 races to go, 16 points behind. May sound difficult but as we have seen in real, its not impossible, therefore we will keep pushing, trying to win remaining races and see how championship develops. Pressure is on Twister's side, we have basically nothing to lose. This is our main focus now, however at the same time I hope we can score some strong results in other categories."
In the coming race at Fuji David Greco will take the seat next to Mikkonen in order to boost the team's championship chances, which hopefully ends up in another successful weekend.
